Visicol Can Cause Kidney Damage
Preparing for a colonoscopy is never a pleasant task. Drinking harsh liquids or swallowing pills for the purpose of giving the doctor a better view of your colon is never anyone’s idea of fun. But if you’ve taken Visicol or other oral sodium phosphate (OSP) medication to prepare for a colonoscopy procedure, the experience may not just be unpleasant, it may be downright dangerous.
Acute Phosphate Nephropathy (APN)
APN is characterized by acute and subsequent chronic renal failure following exposure to oral sodium phosphate bowel purgatives like Visicol. Acute phosphate nephropathy side effects include chronic tubular injury with prominent tubular and interstitial calcium phosphate deposits. Those at highest risk include elderly individuals, females, those with hypertension or chronic kidney disease (CKD), and those being treated with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, and diuretics.
FDA ‘Black Box’ Warning on Visicol
Given the serious nature of these injuries, the FDA in December 2008 required a ‘black box’ warning – the administration’s strictest – to be added to the labeling of Visicol. According to the FDA, doctors should consider avoiding the use of OSPs in patients with kidney disease, impaired renal function or perfusion, dehydration, or uncorrected electrolyte abnormalities.
