USPLabs, LLC has been under increasing scrutiny since various health departments, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have been investigating reported cases of acute hepatitis and liver damage in consumers who used certain purported “dietary supplements” marketed by USPLabs.
Although investigations into the precise cause of liver damage are still ongoing, researchers are suggesting that an ingredient known as aegeline may be the cause. Aegeline is found in two USPLabs products – OxyElite Pro and VERSA-1. The FDA eventually issued a consumer advisory warning advising consumers to avoid using any products labelled OxyElite Pro and VERSA-1 while the investigation was pending.
In response to the investigations, consumer advisory warning, and mounting scrutiny from the FDA, USPLabs issued a voluntary recall for certain USPLabs products on November 10, 2013. These products include:
- OxyElite Pro Super Thermo Capsules
- OxyElite Pro Ultra-Intense Thermo Capsules
- OxyElite Pro Super Thermo Powder
On Monday, November 18, 2013, the FDA issued an update informing consumers that in addition to the voluntary recall, USPLabs would also be destroying warehouse stocks of the recalled dietary supplements. According to the FDA Consumer Update, USPLabs’ inventory of recalled products has a retail value of $22 million. The FDA will oversee the destruction of the recalled supplements and will continue their investigation into the cause of liver injury in consumers who used OxyElite Pro.
