Topamax (generic: Topiramate) is prescribed to treat those who suffer from seizures and chronic migraine headaches. It is intended to prevent occurrences before they happen. However, studies have recently linked Topamax to the development of congenital birth defects in newborn babies whose mothers were administered the drug during pregnancy.
If you or a loved one has given birth to a child with a congenital birth defect after taking Topamax while pregnant, you should contact our lawyers immediately for a free confidential case evaluation. You may be entitled to compensation for your injuries and we can help.
What’s the problem?
On March 4, 2011 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning regarding an increased risk of congenital birth defects in babies who were born to women being treated with the anticonvulsant drug Topamax while pregnant. As a result, The FDA has required that Topamax be placed in Pregnancy Category D because of the conclusive evidence linking the drug to birth defects in children.
Side Effects of Topamax
Topamax has been linked to a number of severe, life-threatening side effects including the following:
- Birth defects
- Cleft palate and cleft lip in infants whose mothers were prescribed Topamax during pregnancy
- Dizziness
