Reglan: An Overview
Reglan (Metoclopramide) is a dopamine antagonist originally developed in the 1950s to treat psychiatric patients. The drug is now used to treat a number of gastrointestinal ailments including GERD, acid reflux, and diabetic gastroparesis. Regardless of the reason why an individual has been prescribed Reglan, those who are currently taking or have stopped taking the drug may be at risk of developing an extremely serious condition called tardive dyskinesia (TD).
What is Tardive Dyskinesia?
Tardive dyskinesia is a movement disorder whose symptoms may include (but are not limited to):
- involuntary repetitive movements of the extremities
- lip smacking
- rapid eye movements
- puckering and pursing of the lips
- grimacing
- impaired movement of the fingers
Tardive dyskinesia is an extremely serious health condition, and it is important to note that it is permanent. Always keep detailed records of the medications you are taking – when you start them, what the dosage is initially, when the dosage changes. If you begin to experience any of the symptoms listed above, consult your healthcare provider immediately.
FDA Warning on Reglan
In 2009, the FDA announced that it would be ordering the makers of Reglan to add a boxed warning to their drug labels about the risk of developing tardive dyskinesia. The makers were also required to use a risk evaluation and mitigation strategy [REMS] to make sure that patients are provided with a medication guide that discusses this risk. Reglan manufacturers have changed hands several times over the years, but currently include Baxter International Inc. and several generic drug companies.
