On June 23, 2011, Napa Home & Garden, Inc., in association with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), implemented a nationwide recall of nearly a half-million pourable gel fuels. According to the recall announcement, NapaFire and FireGel fuels may ignite without warning when poured onto an open flame or hot surface of the accompanying firepot. As a result, the gel fuel may cause an eruption of fire from the contact point that can cause severe burn injuries. The recent recall is in response to nearly 37 adverse reports of unexpected ignition, 23 of which ended up causing catastrophic burn injuries.

What’s the problem?
NapaFire and FireGel are both clear, pourable gel fuels used in the illumination of firepots. The firepots serve as decorative instruments that illuminate when the NapaFire or FireGel fuel contained inside is ignited. However, recent reports indicate that these fuels may be responsible for unexpectedly igniting and causing serious burns to anyone in the way of the explosion of fire. The explosions occur when the fuel is poured into a pot that has been ignited by a consumer that did not know or could not tell that the pot was burning. As the fuel is poured onto a flame, it can flash back or splatter on people nearby and the flames spread rapidly from the contact points. Due to the severity of the burns and frequency of the accidents that consumers have suffered, many of them may seek compensation for their pain and suffering by filing a NapaFire and FireGel gel fuel recall lawsuit.
According to the CPSC, NapaFire and FireGel fuels may “ignite unexpectedly and splatter onto people and objects nearby when it is poured into a firepot that is still burning. This hazard can occur if the consumer does not see the flame or is not aware that the firepot is still ignited. Fuel gel that splatters and ignites can pose fire and burn risks to consumers.”
The unexpected igniting of NapaFire and FireGel fuels has been blamed for 37 known accounts of injury. Of those 37 incidents, 23 of them resulted in catastrophic burn injuries. A link between debilitating burn injuries and the use of gel-fueled firepots has surfaced in the states of California, Florida and Indiana since June 11. The most serious of which involved a 14-year-old Riverhead boy who remains in a coma in a Long Island hospital. Due to the severity of the burns and frequency of the accidents, many people may seek compensation for their pain and suffering by filing a NapaFire and FireGel gel fuel recall lawsuit.
