Multaq Lawyer & Lawsuit

Multaq (generic: dronedarone) is an anti-arrhythmic medication that has the ability to alter the rhythm of a patient’s heartbeat. Unfortunately, many patients who take Multaq, do so without knowing of the potential risks associated with the medication. Recent studies suggest that the use of Multaq may be responsible for severe, life-threatening liver dysfunction.

Multaq Lawsuit Update: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has changed the labels on Multaq products to indicate that severe, life-threatening cardiovascular complications may occur in patients with permanent atrial fibrillation.

Overview

As an anti-arrhythmic medication, Multaq assists in maintaining a normal heartbeat in patients who may have severe, life-threatening heart rhythm disorders of the atrium. More specifically, Multaq is used in the treatment of atrial fibrillation. Unfortunately, many patients who take Multaq, do not realize the potential risks associated with the medication. In fact, Sanofi-Aventis Canada Inc., in association with Health Canada, has recently received reports that suggest a link between the use of Multaq and potentially fatal liver dysfunctions.

Multaq Side Effects

Common Multaq side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Unusual Fatigue
  • Pain and discomfort in the upper right stomach area
  • Jaundice
  • Darkened urine
  • Itching
  • Loss of appetite

Though minimal, these symptoms may be warning signs of potential liver failure onset by the use of Multaq.

Multaq Liver Failure

Liver failure occurs when large parts of the liver become damaged beyond repair and the liver is no longer able to function. It is a life-threatening condition that demands urgent medical care. Most often, liver failure occurs gradually and over many years. However, a more rare condition known as acute liver failure occurs rapidly (in as little as 48 hours) and can be difficult to detect initially.

FDA Warning

The FDA acknowledged the severe risks associated with Multaq in a warning to healthcare professionals and patients about cases of rare, but severe liver injury, including two cases of acute liver failure leading to liver transplant in patients treated with the heart medication dronedarone.
