In the wake of increasing reports of illicit sales of steroid-containing “dietary supplements,” as well as reports of injuries such as liver failure associated with such products, The Senators (Ret.) Firm announced the results of an informal investigation into steroid sales through major online communities. A review of advertisements posted on Southern California Craigslist sites servicing Orange and Los Angeles Counties as well as the Inland Empire, indicates that banned steroids are being openly offered for sale.
Over a 30 day period, staff at The Senators Firm uncovered more than 40 posted advertisements on Southern California Craigslist sites using simple search terms such as “steroids,” “prohormones,” “testosterone,” and “bodybuilding.” One ad announced, “ I am selling the original H-drol (with Cycle Assist) that was banned in 2010.” Another poster, identifying itself as “MULE anabolic labs,” advertises pure “testosterone cypionate,” a prescription steroid, in vials injection-ready vials starting at $120 a milliliter. Still another offers “Tren,” “Superdrol,” and “M1T,” all of which are banned under the federal Anabolic Steroid Control Act.
The investigation by The Senators Firm comes on the heels of revelations made by a leading ant-doping organization that similar steroid-containing “dietary supplements”are being sold by Internet retailers on Amazon.com. In addition, in November of 2009, the FDA announced a recall of 65 “dietary supplements” sold on the website BodyBuiding.com the Agency said were tainted with illegal steroids which pose significant health hazards, including liver failure and heart damage.
Several of the products listed in the BodyBuilding.com recall were among those being advertised on Craigslist, said Thomas M. Moore, Managing Partner of The Senators (Ret.) Firm, LLP. “It is really distressing to see these terribly dangerous products recalled by one site only to pop up on others,” said Moore who represents a number of people who were seriously injured as the result of ingesting “dietary supplements” that, unbeknownst to them, contained anabolic steroids.
