On Tuesday, July 23rd, female math teacher M.L. Johnson was charged with multiple counts of sexual assault. The Brea Olinda High School math teacher – a 45-year-old resident of Anaheim, California – was charged with 9 felony counts for the sexual assault of a 17-year-old male student at the school. Reports have since revealed that some of the alleged crimes occurred at Brea Olinda High School, while several more incidents occurred off campus.
In what appears to be a continuous series of sexually explicit offenses, Johnson is now the fourth female teacher in Southern California to be charged with sexual assault of a male student this year alone. Investigations into the matter have revealed that Johnson met the student at Brea Olinda High School. Prosecutors have also alleged that the math teacher began to privately tutor the young man in addition to many other students at the high school The difference with this particular tutoring relationship, however, was the involvement of sexual relations, which reportedly began in April and carried on until June of the same year.
Investigation by authorities was officially brought underway when the male student’s parents contacted their local law enforcement office, expressing their concerns and suspicions about the potential relationship going on between their son and one of his high school teachers. The investigation into these allegations continues to be ongoing, and authorities are still requesting that anyone with further information about the matter come forward immediately. If convicted of the nine charges that she has been accused of, Johnson could face up to eight years and four months in state prison.
Sexual abuse in public schools and private schools alike seems to be evermore present in school systems throughout the state of California, as the most recent Brea Olinda incident would suggest. The prevalence is so evident, in fact, that some studies now suggest that approximately 10% of students nationwide will suffer from some degree of sexual abuse during the course of their school careers. If such was the case for your child, then do not hesitate to involve a California sexual abuse lawyer from our firm in the matter as quickly as possible. As the parents of the Brea Olinda High School student demonstrated, involving law enforcement officials and legal professionals in the matter is critical to seeing the case through to a successful completion.
