FDA: Tainted drugs can no longer be marketed as dietary supplements
December 16, 2010 – After receiving hundreds of reports of side effects and deaths, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warned manufacturers of so-called ‘dietary supplements’ that they can no longer advertise their products as such.
“These tainted products can cause serious adverse effects, including strokes, organ failure and death,” said FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg. “The manufacturers selling these tainted products are operating outside the law.”
What kind of supplements is the FDA targeting?
The FDA is focusing on three categories where the bulk of these illegal products come from:
- Weight loss – Many of these products contain sibutramine, which has been found to increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.
- Sexual enhancement – Products like Vigor-25, Magic Power Coffee, & Duro Extend Capsules for Men. These have the same active ingredient as approved drugs Viagra, Cialis and Levitra–which are available only by prescription.
- Body building products – Some of these supplements contain anabolic steroids, which are strictly controlled substances that can lead to serious injury or death.
What makes these ‘supplements’ dangerous?
Lab results on a number of dietary supplements revealed a host of undeclared active ingredients including anticoagulants (drugs that prevent blood from clotting) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) that prevent inflammation and pain. The FDA also found supplements that contained active drugs that had been taken off the market as a safety precaution.
