Medical experts from the Queen’s Medical Center’s Liver Center in Honolulu have identified the ingredient aegeline as being the most likely cause of liver injuries in consumers who used the purported dietary supplement OxyElite Pro. In the past year, more than 50 cases of liver damage, including acute hepatitis, have been associated with certain OxyElite Pro products. A majority of these cases – more than 30 – have been reported in Hawaii, including one reported death.

Aegeline, a naturally occurring substance found in the bael tree, is now being identified as the likely cause of live damage, although the substance has not been studied in humans and research into precisely why and how aegeline causes harm is still ongoing. In addition to suggesting that aegeline may be the cause, doctors from Hawaii are also suggesting that genetics may play a role. Most injured consumers were of Pacific Island descent and almost all were obese. OxyElite Pro injuries are still being reported in Hawaii.
Due to lax regulations and the overwhelming amount of dietary supplements on the market, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has less oversight and control over the dietary supplement market than with prescription medications. Manufacturers do not have to receive approval from the FDA before introducing products to the market. They are, however, required to prove that new ingredients are safe for consumers. Officials from the FDA have stated that USPLabs, the manufacturer of OxyElite Pro, failed to notify the FDA of its use of aegeline and failed to establish that the ingredient was safe.
