San Diego Woman Experiences Liver Failure After Using OxyElite Pro

Another reported case of liver injury has turned up in connection to the dietary weight loss supplement OxyElite Pro – this time from San Diego. According to an official from the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency – which also issued a consumer warning for OxyElite Pro this past Wednesday – a 45-year-old San Diego woman suffered acute liver failure after using OxyElite Pro. Investigations into the precise cause of the liver injury are still being conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The new report comes after a number of cases of liver damage and acute hepatitis were reported in Hawaii and several other states throughout the country. In Hawaii, medical investigators found associations between liver damage and OxyElite Pro, including two cases that required liver transplants and one that resulted in death.

Investigators are still unsure as to the precise cause of the liver damage, although a new dietary ingredient known as aegeline is suspected to be the cause. Still, the CDC and FDA are continuing their work to find the exact cause of the 56 cases of liver damage that have been reported to the CDC so far.

In the meantime – and in response to widespread scrutiny of their products – OxyElite Pro manufacturer USPLabs, LLC issued a voluntary recall of several OxyElite Products on November 10, 2013. You can learn more about the recalled items on our website. In addition, the FDA issued a consumer advisory warning urging consumers to avoid products labeled OxyElite Pro and VERSA-1, another USPLabs product containing aegeline.
