Yasmin Lawsuit Update:Officials at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) held a meeting on December 8 to discuss the safety and effectiveness of Bayer’s popular Yasmin. According to meeting notes, a panel of outside experts voted that the current labeling of Yasmin does not adequately reflect the risks associated with the contraceptive. Subsequently, the vote witnessed 21 out of 26 professionals support a label change that emphasizes the risk of severe blood clotting. However, the same panel concluded, in a 15-11 vote, that the benefits of preventing unwanted pregnancies outweighed the corresponding risks.
Update – 4/26/2011 – Recent studies published in the British Medical Journalacknowledge an increased risk of venous thromboembolism, a severe form of blood clotting deep within the body, among users of forth generation oral contraceptives like Yaz, Ocella and Yasmin. The risk of developing a blood clot from these contraceptives is twice that of previous levonorgestrel-based birth control pills.
The popular birth control drug Yasmin® has been associated with heart attacks, strokes, blood clots, pancreas and gallbladder damage.

What’s wrong with Yasmin?
Yasmin, manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, is an oral contraceptive known in the medical world as drospirenone. Drospirenone binds to the progesterone receptor, and the resulting complex leads to an increased difficulty of sperm entry into the uterus. Unfortunately, Yasmin has come under recent public scrutiny because of its alleged link to the development of serious side effects.
Yasmin Side Effects
The FDA has warned Bayer for misleading ads regarding Yasmin. Women have sustained life-altering injuries including (but not limited to):
- blood clots
- DVTs
- pulmonary embolisms
- strokes
- heart attacks
- death
- gallbladder disease
- liver disease
- renal failure
Bayer has been subject to lawsuits regarding the safety of Yasmin for years. These claims came after Bayer had agreed to run a 20 million dollar corrective campaign initiated because the company had overstated the benefits of both Yasmin and Yaz.
Yasmin Label Change to Include Risk of Blood Clots
The FDA has recently completed a review of observational studies regarding the risk of blood clots in women taking drospirenone-containing birth control pills. Based on the data acknowledged in the review, officials at the FDA have concluded that drospirenone-containing birth control pills may be associated with a higher risk for blood clots than other progestin-containing pills. To put the risk of developing a blood clot from a birth control pill into perspective: The risk of developing a blood clots is higher when using any birth control pills than not using them. As a result, the FDA has requested a label change.
According to a Drug Safety Communication, the revised drug labels will report that some epidemiologic studies reported as high as a three-fold increase in the risk of blood clots for drospirenone-containing products when compared to products containing levonorgestrel or some other progestins.
Was Bayer making misleading claims about Yasmin?
Yasmin television commercials implied that using the drug could help alleviate premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and that it could be used by itself to treat some forms of acne. The FDA considered the claims to be misleading, and required the company to do a $20 million corrective campaign to clarify that Yasmin is not approved for PMS, and that acne treatment is not its main purpose. Whether you were mislead by Yasmin’s early advertising campaign or have suffered a severe side effect because of the drug, you have legal rights that need to be protected.
