Victoza (liraglutide) is a prescription medication used to treat type-2 diabetes. First approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in January 2010, Victoza emerged on the pharmaceutical scene amidst warnings from FDA pharmacologists and a clinical safety reviewer that clinical trials involving the drug resulted in higher risks of pancreatitis and thyroid cancer than other diabetes drugs. In fact, the use of Victoza has been linked to several other serious side effects, including renal failure. Novo Nordisk, the pharmaceutical manufacturer of Victoza, has come under widespread scrutiny for their failure to ensure the safety of their product and the patients who took the medication. The most significant risks posed by Victoza include:
- Pancreatitis & Pancreatic Cancer – Victoza directly affects insulin levels produced and released by the pancreas. As a result, the drug may cause inflammation of the pancreas, known as pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is also a risk factor for developing pancreatic cancer, a serious and sometimes fatal form of cancer. Common symptoms of pancreatic cancer include darkened urine, pale-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes), abdominal pain, bloating, swelling, and weight loss.
- Thyroid Cancer – Studies conducted with lab rats have found supporting evidence linking the use of Victoza to the development of thyroid cancer. Common symptoms associated with thyroid cancer include pain in the neck and throat, swollen lymph nodes, and difficulty swallowing.
- Renal Failure – Renal failure or impaired kidney function has been reported by patients using Victoza. Common signs of renal failure can include little or no urine during urination, swelling of the legs and feet, bloody stools or urine, bruising easily, and others.
As more people began taking the new diabetes medication, more reports of adverse health events began to accumulate. As a result, widespread efforts have been made by health and consumer advocacy groups to have the medication pulled from the market. In response to these petitions, the FDA recently required Novo Nordisk to place warning labels on Victoza regarding the risks posed by using the medication. Unfortunately, these warnings may have come too late to patients already taking the dangerous drug.
