What is Byetta?
Byetta, or exenatide, is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. Administered as an injection, Byetta was yet another revolutionary pharmaceutical product that significantly improved the lives of diabetes patients. As the use of Byetta increased in the United States and more studies were conducted, it became apparent that the medication had a potential to cause significant complications, most notably kidney failure, pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer.
The pharmaceutical industry is steeped in competition. Corporations such as Amylin Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Byetta, often neglect costly, lengthy and exhaustive testing in order to push their products onto the market before competitors. While Byetta has been shown to be an effective form of regulating blood sugar levels in diabetic patients, it was soon discovered that continual use increased the risks of serious side effects. Reports of pancreatic cancer in patients using Byetta steadily increased, and the medical, legal and regulatory communities began to take note.
As a result of the influx of reports of pancreatitis, a common precursor to cancer of the pancreas, the FDA and other organizations increased their efforts to trace the links between Byetta and potentially fatal conditions. A 2011 UCLA study reported the Byetta treatment demonstrated an increased propensity for the development of pancreatic cancer, a serious and often deadly condition. As a result, Amylin has faces numerous lawsuits for the damages Byetta caused.
