Gianvi® Pancreatitis Lawsuit

As with all fourth generation oral contraceptives, Gianvi utilizes drospirenone to assist in the prevention of unwanted pregnancies. However, Gianvi introduces a second active ingredient, ethinyl estradiol, to further enhance the effects. Unfortunately, recent studies suggest that the inclusion of drospirenone may result in catastrophic complications. Our law firm is currently investigating the potential link between drospirenone and aggressive forms of pancreatitis.

If you or a loved one has suffered from pancreatitis or other adverse health events after taking Gianvi, you should contact our lawyers immediately for a free confidential case evaluation. You may be entitled to compensation for your injuries and we can help.

Gianvi Pancreatitis Lawsuit Overview

Similar to that of the immensely popular Yaz, Gianvi is an oral contraceptive consisting of a dual action formula (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol). This generic birth control pill was manufactured by Teva and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2010. Following FDA approval, Gianvi was indicated to assist in the prevention of pregnancy for women preferring oral contraceptives to other alternatives. Gianvi is also indicated for the treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and moderate acne in women at least 14 years of age.

As a fourth generation contraceptive, Gianvi’s chemical composition is similar to that of Beyaz, Yaz, Loryna, Yasmin, and Ocella. Drospirenone, the active ingredient in each, is a progestin that has the ability to prevent the ovulation process in women by altering the conditions of the cervical and uterine linings. Combination oral contraceptives (COCs) such as these act by suppressing gonadotropins. Although the primary mechanism of this action is the inhibition of ovulation, other alterations include changes in the cervical mucus (which increases the difficulty of sperm entry into the uterus) and the endometrium (which reduces the likelihood of implantation). As a result, these altered conditions make it more difficult for any sperm to reach the uterus. Therefore serving as an affective form of birth control.

Despite Gianvi’s 99% effective rate, the mechanism of action responsible for the prevention of pregnancy may be linked to dangerous side effects. Prolonged use of Gianvi may result in several complications, including pancreatitis. Our law firm is currently investigating the potential link between drospirenone and aggressive forms of pancreatitis. Due to the severe nature of this condition, women may contact a lawyer at The Senators (Ret.) Firm, LLP for a free case evaluation regarding their potential Gianvi pancreatitis lawsuit.

Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis is characterized by a sudden inflammation of the pancreas. Accordingly, the pancreas is a gland located behind the stomach in the upper section of the abdomen. The pancreas’ primary role is the production of several critical enzymes. Subsequently, the pancreas is tasked with creating enzymes that assist in digestion and hormones that help regulate the way your body processes sugar (glucose).

Patients may witness the development of pancreatitis occur in one of two ways. The first of which is known as acute pancreatitis, meaning it appears suddenly and lasts for a couple of days. Chronic pancreatitis, the second form, occurs over many years. Mild cases of pancreatitis may go away without treatment, but severe cases can cause life-threatening complications. Pancreatitis can cause serious complications, including:

  • Breathing problems: The presence of acute pancreatitis may result in distinct chemical changes that affect specific lung functions. As a result, oxygen levels in the blood may plummet and lead to severe breathing complications.
  • Diabetes: Damage to insulin-producing cells in your pancreas from chronic pancreatitis can lead to diabetes, a disease that affects the way your body uses blood sugar.
  • Infection: Acute pancreatitis may make your pancreas susceptible to a severe bacterial infection. Pancreatic infections are serious and require intensive treatment, such as surgery to remove the infected tissue.
  • Kidney failure: The affect that pancreatitis has on chemicals produced by the glad may harm the kidney. The kidney may react adversely to the new chemical compositions, resulting in potential kidney failure.
  • Malnutrition: Pancreatitis, in any form, may induce the pancreas to produce fewer enzymes that are needed to break down and process nutrients. The reduction of these enzymes may lead to malnutrition, diarrhea and weight loss.
