What’s the problem with Fixodent?
Fixodent is an extremely popular denture adhesive used by millions of Americans every day. However, recent studies suggest that excessive use of denture creams such as Fixodent may cause copper deficiency, nerve damage, and a serious nerve disorder called neuropathy. There have been reports that denture wearers may absorb the zinc contained in denture cream through their gums, causing zinc poisoning and copper depletion, which can lead to life-threatening nerve damage and neuropathy.
Fixodent & Neuropathy
Neuropathy is the most serious health problem linked to Fixodent and other denture creams, and refers to a collection of disorders that occur when nerves of the peripheral nervous system are damaged. The condition is generally referred to as peripheral neuropathy, and is most commonly due to damage to nerve axons. Sings and symptoms of Fixodent-induced neuropathy include (but are not limited to):
- Numbness and tingling in the extremities
- Balance problems
- Loss of sensation
- Unexplained pain
- Decreased walking stride
Fixodent Zinc Poisoning
Fixodent neuropathy is thought to occur because of the mineral zinc. Zinc in small amounts is healthy, but excessive exposure can cause an individual to become copper deficient which results in neurological problems such as neuropathy. The problems with Fixodent occur when consumers use too much of the product over a long period of time to keep poor fitting dentures in place.
