Darvon Background
Darvon was introduced on to the market in 1957. For nearly 20 years, it ranked right behind Valium and Librium as one of America’s most popular prescription drugs, averaging 39 million prescriptions a year between 1973 and 1975. However, when propoxyphene (the generic name for Darvon) was cited in 589 overdose deaths in 23 U.S. cities, public advocacy groups began to demand that the painkiller be banned.
Darvon Recall
In November 2010, Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals withdrew Davron (Darvon N 100 mg) from the market at the FDA’s request. Generic drug makers were also asked to remove their products. According to the FDA statement:
“The drug’s effectiveness in reducing pain is no longer enough to outweigh the drug’s serious potential heart risks.”
The FDA sought the removal after receiving clinical data showing that Darvon places users at risk of extremely serious or even fatal heart rhythm abnormalities. Even when taken at recommended doses, Darvon can cause significant changes to the electrical activity of the heart. These changes can increase the risk for serious abnormal heart rhythms that have been linked to a number of adverse effects, including sudden death.
Darvon: An Ineffective Painkiller
Not only is Darvon extremely dangerous, but doctors report it is not as effective at managing pain as such over-the-counter drugs as acetaminophen. The UK and the EU banned Propoxyphene in 2005 and 2009 respectively, because they felt it was ineffective and that the side effects were too serious to ignore. To date, some 120 million prescriptions have been filled in the United States for Propoxyphene-containing drugs since the UK ban, and many experts believe 1,000 to 2,000 Americans have died from the drug since that time.
