Last year a wave of adverse effects – including liver damage and acute hepatitis – were reported by consumers who had used certain OxyElite Pro products, a purported dietary supplement used to lose weight and build muscle. In response to rising scrutiny and a warning letter from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), USPLabs issued a voluntary recall of certain OxyElite Pro products on November 9, 2013. Now, three months after the recall was issued consumers are continuing to report illnesses after taking OxyElite Pro.
Despite efforts made by the U.S. CDC, FDA, and state health departments, consumers are still getting, using, and being injured by OxyElite Pro, according to medical professionals in Hawaii – where a number of OxyElite injury cases have been reported. In total, more than 50 people nationwide – including 33 in Hawaii – have experienced illness after using OxyElite Pro. One woman from Maui died in October. Although experts are still investigating the relationship between OxyElite Pro and acute hepatitis and liver damage, safety officials have stated that reported cases do indicate a link.
On Monday, officials from the Queen’s Medical Center’s Liver Center in Hawaii informed state legislators that the ingredient aegeline was most likely the cause of the liver damage. Aegeline is a synthetic version of a natural substance found in bael trees. As lawsuits continue to grow, investigators are still determining why so many cases have been concentrated in Hawaii. Some experts suggest that genetics may play a factor, as most reported injuries have been experienced by victims of Pacific Island descent.
