Metoclopramide, a generic form of Reglan, is a gastrointestinal prokinetic agent used in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and diabetic gastroparesis. In addition, injectable versions of the medication are used after chemotherapy to prevent nausea and vomiting. However, metoclopramide has recently been linked to a number of severe and potentially harmful side effects including tardive dyskinesia (TD).

What’s the problem?
Metoclopramide, a medication typically prescribed to those who suffer from gastrointestinal disorders, has been linked to an increased risk of developing the serious moving disorder known as tardive dyskinesia. In January of 2009, the FDA issued a warning against the chronic use of metoclopramide and required a black box warning because of the side effects associated with it. Most notably, tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder associated with rapid involuntary movements.
Metoclopramide Side Effects
The following side effects have been associated with metoclopramide:
- Involuntary movements
- Facial tics
- Grimacing
- Tongue protrusion
- Rapid eye movements and blinking
- Impaired movements of the fingers
- Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)
Complications with Metoclopramide
Patients who take metoclopramide for gastrointestinal disorders may be at an increased risk of developing a severe condition known as tardive dyskinesia. Other complications that may occur because of exposure to the medication include:
- Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS)
- Dystonia
